VANESSA

It’s only been a week, and it feels like it’s been forever. After the storm cleared, Brad never left. He’s been here, trying to make sense of this new romance we have. I feel like we’ve known each other forever, and despite my looming anxiety about Joey finding out, everything feels right.

We sit on the blankets and enjoy our picnic, cuddling in each other’s arms, watching television, and joking about whatever doesn’t make sense on the programs. We’ve made ourselves at home, and it’s like we’re meant to be this way.

Brad flips through the channels on the television, bored with the broadcasts and programs. He finally shuts it off and turns, his eyes focusing only on me. I melt inside, once again, knowing exactly what’s on his mind.

He slowly kisses me, as if it’s the first time again. His lips are soft and gentle as he makes a wider motion, slipping his tongue into my mouth. He embraces me, moving his hands up my shirt, tension rising as he fidgets to unlatch my bra.

But then, we hear a thud on the floor behind us, which is a sound that wouldn’t normally happen when two people are alone. We both pause in shock and jump up, turning to find Joey, standing there with her eyes wide.

She stares at us both in shock, unable to move. We jump away from each other quickly and Brad leaps to his feet, unable to speak or look her in the eye.

Time stops as I take a deep breath, preparing myself for what’s about to come next.

"How could you!" Joey yells at both of us.

She’s angry, hurt, and confused. I can see it in her eyes. She’s struggling to understand what has just happened between Brad and me. I want to comfort her but I know that she would never accept my apology right now.

Despite the fear in my heart, I take a brave step forward and attempt to embrace her. But she steps back, avoiding my touch. Instead of melting into a hug, Joey shoves me away and backs against the wall.

"You two have been in a relationship and you kept it a secret from me?! How could you do that?"

"Joey, I can explain!" I yell back, tears streaming from my eyes.

"There’s no way to explain. You have betrayed my trust by going behind my back, and that to me feels I've been lied to!"

"Joey, come on, please listen to her." Brad intervenes, hoping Joey will listen.

"Not another word from you, Brad! You come into my house, while I'm away, and find my best friend housesitting. How long has this been happening? Wait, don't answer that!"

Joey shakes her head, agitated. "You've known each other for years, and I'm just now finding out."

"We are, too," Brad manages to say.

"Oh, so you came into my house while I was gone and decided this was the moment to take advantage of my best friend? That makes you look like scum, bro!"

"Joey, please," I say, trying to get another word in.
